With the beginning of the war and the arrival of many displaced families to their area, the Focolare Movement invited everyone who could to offer good-quality items to support those in need. B. & A. made an inventory of their shop and gathered everything they could donate from their stock that was still in excellent condition, offering it with love and joy to the displaced families. At the same time, they themselves were going through serious financial difficulties. They even tried to sell a piece of land they owned in order to overcome the crisis and ease their financial burden, but because of the difficult economic situation in Lebanon, they were unable to sell it. As a result, they had to borrow money from relatives and friends, some of whom were themselves in need of their money. After some time, the Focolare Movement, trough the Humanité Nouvelle association, contacted them and informed them that displaced families would come to their shop to buy the clothes they needed as part of a support project organized by the Melkite Patriarchate and sponsored by AMU. We had not yet found a new donor, and we were wondering how we could continue providing assistance to so many people who depend on it. We felt that it was time to take action and reach out to members of the Lebanese diaspora. The needs remain significant, and many people rely on our support—however small—to help meet their monthly expenses. We shared the news without knowing what kind of response we would receive. AMU (Action for a United World) kindly made itself available to collect donations on behalf of the project. What happened next truly surprised us. At first, the donations we received were enough to cover expenses until the end of June. Then, additional contributions arrived, and today we have enough support to continue our work through the end of the year. The donations came from many different parts of the world and from people of all ages. One particularly moving story is that of C. and her family. On May 31, C. celebrated her First Communion and Confirmation. For four years, she had been preparing for this important milestone through catechism classes. As the celebration approached, her parents suggested that instead of purchasing traditional party favors, she could make a donation to help people in need. Together, they decided to make a donation through AMU to support our project. When I went to thank C., she seemed to feel that she had done nothing extraordinary. The couple monopolized the water and denied Maya's family passage, which created serious difficulties, especially in summer when water was scarce. Attempts to resolve the issue peacefully failed, culminating in an incident where Maya’s husband was verbally assaulted by one of the couple’s sons. Eventually, Maya's family was forced to buy water. Despite all of this, when the opportunity arose to help families in need, Maya and her family immediately thought of this very couple, choosing to provide them with monthly financial support for their medication. This act of kindness transformed the relationship completely. Over time, with regular visits and continued support, the neighbors became affectionate and began treating Maya’s family like their own. Par conséquent, ils ont dû emprunter de l’argent à des proches et à des amis, dont certains avaient eux-mêmes besoin de leur propre argent. Quelque temps plus tard, le Mouvement des Focolari, par le biais de l’association Humanité Nouvelle, les a contactés pour les informer que des familles déplacées viendraient dans leur magasin pour acheter les vêtements dont elles avaient besoin, dans le cadre d’un projet de soutien organisé par le Patriarcat Melkite et parrainé par l’AMU. Puis d’autres aides sont arrivées et, aujourd’hui, nous pouvons envisager de poursuivre notre action jusqu’à la fin de l’année. Les dons sont venus de nombreuses régions du monde et de personnes de tous âges. Parmi elles, il y a l’histoire de C. et de sa famille. Les religieuses qui gèrent l'établissement ont été touchées par la qualité des relations au sein du groupe de bénévoles. La sœur responsable, admirative de l'affection qu'elles se portent mutuellement, a déclaré : « Quel beau groupe, comme ils s'aiment les uns les autres ! ». Ce projet d’aide est entré dans sa vie peu après que son mari et elle ont perdu leur plus jeune fils. Ils étaient submergés par le chagrin et s’étaient repliés sur eux-mêmes. Ce projet, dit-elle, a été comme une main tendue vers eux, une « fenêtre » qui a rouvert leur cœur à la vie, à l’amour et aux autres. Trois de leurs enfants mariés souffrent également de problèmes de santé. Au départ, les relations entre ce couple et la famille de Maya étaient tendues en raison d’un différend de longue date concernant l’accès à l’eau provenant d’un terrain adjacent. Le couple monopolisait l’eau et refusait le passage à la famille de Maya, ce qui créait de graves difficultés, surtout en été lorsque l’eau se faisait rare. Les tentatives pour résoudre le problème à l’amiable ont échoué, menant à un incident au cours duquel le mari de Maya a été agressé verbalement par l’un des fils du couple. Finalement, la famille de Maya a été contrainte d’acheter de l’eau. Malgré tout cela, lorsque l’occasion s’est présentée d’aider des familles dans le besoin, Maya et sa famille ont immédiatement pensé à ce couple, choisissant de leur apporter une aide financière mensuelle pour leurs médicaments. Ce geste de générosité a complètement transformé leur relation. Au fil du temps, grâce à des visites régulières et à un soutien constant, les voisins se sont attachés à eux et ont commencé à considérer la famille de Maya comme la leur.
