When Solidarity Lights Up the Darkness

But more than just financial help, the project built strong human connections—full of communication, closeness, love, active listening, and mutual support.

Among those helped was an elderly, ill couple—Yasmin and Kamal E.—who were unemployed and whose married children also struggled financially. Through the monthly aid, a beautiful bond developed. Every time they received help, the couple was visibly moved. In time, they began sharing produce from their small garden with Maya’s family, treating them like their own children.

They said they could feel God’s love through these gestures. Their daughter testified how this relationship brought peace, serenity, and renewed their faith.

Eventually, the wife passed away, followed by her husband just five days later. Despite their grief, the couple’s children expressed immense affection and gratitude toward Maya’s family, seeing them as part of their extended family even during the mourning period. They later visited Maya, further strengthening the bond.

Though Maya was deeply impacted by the loss of Hani and Camille, she also felt the power of love that transcends death. She believes that drawing closer to others allows true brotherhood to flourish.

They now remain in contact with the couple’s children and sent them a heartfelt message from the entire group involved in the medical aid project. In return, they received a touching message of love and appreciation:

“How can I possibly thank them? Please thank them on my behalf, from the bottom of my heart.

First of all, for remembering my family in their prayers… truly, they are like a real family—the Focolare family. They made us feel as if we were one.

From me and my brothers—because as I read the message aloud, they asked me to thank you, too.”

“Thank you so much, and thank the organization for the help. Even if it’s small, it helps me get through difficult times.”

“I’m writing to express my gratitude for your support during this especially hard time in my life. Everything you do reminds me I’m not alone. What you're doing for people during this difficult period cannot be expressed in words. Thank you for standing by me when I needed it most. I truly appreciate the impact you have on people’s lives.”
